Implementing ESG London 2019 is a full-day event targeted at hedge funds which are developing or considering developing an ESG policy and strategy to incorporate into their investment decision making process and hedge fund investors which intend to begin using or increase their use of ESG considerations as part of their hedge fund manager selection process. Part workshop, part conference, Implementing ESG London 2019 promises to be a must-attend for hedge fund managers and hedge fund investors.

Werner von Baum: Managing Partner, Chief Risk Officer,, LGT Capital partners

Werner von Baum

Werner von Baum is a Managing Partner and Chief Risk Officer (CRO) at LGT Capital Partners Ltd. He has been with the firm for 15 years. Within the Risk and Compliance teams, Werner is responsible for the independent monitoring of all traditional and dedicated sustainable portfolios across asset classes and LGT CP’s operating companies. He is also a member of the ESG Committee, which coordinates the strategic direction of LGT CP with regards to ESG integration in its business activities, as well as in various investment processes. The ESG Committee supports the portfolio management units in the strategic development of such investment processes, discusses the general ESG orientation of our portfolios and has an important governance function in all sustainability issues. Mr. von Baum holds a degree in economics and a diploma from European Business School (Frankfurt, London, Paris).

 

Jason Mitchell: Co-Head of Responsible Investment and Co-Chair of the Responsible Investment Committee, Man Group

Jason Mitchell

Jason Mitchell is Man Group’s Co-Head of Responsible Investment. He co-chairs Man Group’s Responsible Investment Committee and its Stewardship and Active Ownership Committee. Besides having managed environmental and sustainability strategies, he speaks and publishes widely on responsible investment. He also hosts the podcast Perspectives Towards a Sustainable Future. Most recently, Jason was Sustainability Strategist at Man Group. He worked at Man GLG from 2004 to 2008 and from 2010 to present, taking two years off from 2008 to 2010 to advise the UK government on infrastructure development across Sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to this, he was an investment analyst with Pequot Capital and Andor Capital. Jason serves as one of 15 appointed members on the EFRAG (European Financial Reporting Advisory Group) European Lab Steering Group and sits on the Advisory Board of Imperial College Business School’s Centre for Climate Finance and Investment. Having chaired the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) Hedge Funds Advisory Committee from 2014 to 2018, he now serves on the PRI Academic Advisory Committee and a number of other working groups. He is also co-editor of PRI Perspectives academic journal. Jason holds a master’s degree in international political economy from the London School of Economics and a bachelor’s degree in English literature and classics. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and the British-American Project.

 

Will Martindale: Director of Policy and Research, UNPRI

Will Martindale

Will Martindale is Director of Policy and Research at PRI, the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment. Will leads PRI’s global regulatory affairs and public policy programme, the flagship fiduciary duty project jointly with UNEP FI and the implementation of PRI’s sustainable financial system activities in national policy reform. Will has a background in banking, joining JPMorgan's graduate programme in June 2004. In September 2010, Will joined French bank, BNP Paribas, as a business manager for their credit trading desk. Will holds a MSC in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics and a BSC in Maths from King’s College London.

 

 

Larry Abele: CEO, Auriel Investors

Larry Abele

Larry is CEO and portfolio manager at Auriel Investors, a dedicated impact asset manager he founded 11 years ago. He is also the architect behind Impact-Cubed, a portfolio impact measurement model and dataset incubated within Auriel and spun out in 2017 to go on and win industry acclaim for research innovation in responsible investment research. Larry holds a BA in Mathematics & Economics from Florida State University and a MPhil in Economics & Politics from Cambridge University, England. In-between educational periods, Larry spent three years walking with a small group of activists as part of the ‘Global Walk for a Livable World’ across the USA, Europe and Asia to promote environmental awareness. Larry has amassed 20 years plus experience in the investment area and his specialisms range from quantitative and financial modelling, portfolio construction and risk management, environmental economics and research, as well as alternative investments to name a few. In 2007 Larry was named one of the twenty rising stars in hedge funds by Institutional Investor Magazine. Larry started his career at First Quadrant in California. Following this, he worked at Barclays Global Investors’ San Francisco office as a member of the Advanced Strategies and Research Group. Larry later moved to Deutsche Asset Management as Global Head of Quantitative Strategies and Portfolio Engineering. He left DeAM in 2004 and founded Auriel, a $2bn absolute return fund specializing in macro, currency and equity long-short strategies, later sold to Aspect Capital with the equity group spun out as a separate entity named Auriel Investors active to this day in impact investing.

 

Lisa Beauvilain: Head of Sustainability & ESG, Impax Asset Management

Lisa Beauvilain

Lisa is responsible for the development and oversight of Impax’s Sustainability and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) analysis, including environmental policy and legislation research in the Listed Equity team. She is the Chair of Impax’s ESG and Lens Committees and also Co-Heads Impax’s impact investment work. Lisa joined Impax in 2010. She started working in the financial industry in 1999 and previously worked as an executive director in the Investment Management Division of Goldman Sachs International. Lisa has also worked as an independent consultant, focusing on environmental policy research and analysis. She is active within working groups relating to impact investing, the circular economy and ESG standard setting with several external industry organisations. Lisa has an MSc in Environment and Development from the London School of Economics as well as an MSc in Finance from the Hanken School of Economics, Finland.

 

Max Budra: Associate, Markets, Governance and Innovation, AIMA

Max Budra

Max joined AIMA in 2017 as a member of the research team, and moved to the markets, governance and Innovation team as an Associate in 2019. His role currently focuses on policy and regulatory outreach around responsible investment, and and on providing support to members on the integration of responsible investment. Prior to joining AIMA, Max worked in strategy consulting in London. He holds a Master's degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

 

 

 

James von Claer: Director, Arabesque S-Ray

James von Claer

James von Claer has over 25 years’ experience in asset management and financial services. Prior to joining Arabesque S-Ray he was with Notz Stucki, a well-known alternative investment manager, developing investment products around sustainability themes, notably renewable energy assets. Before this, James worked for a JP Morgan affiliate in Paris, where he was responsible for credit management and structured products. Using the combination of experience in sustainable asset management and credit, James is advising asset owners and managers on the benefits of integrating quantitative analysis of ESG-related risks across both the capital and credit markets. James is a seasoned conference speaker addressing issues such as the relevance of integrating ESG metrics across the full spectrum of asset classes, as well as on the advantages of using the power of machine learning and big data for enhanced risk management.

 

 

 

Thomas Deinet: Executive Director, Standards Board for Alternative Investments

Thomas Deinet

Thomas Deinet was appointed Executive Director of the Standards Board for Alternative Investments (SBAI), previously known as the Hedge Fund Standards Board (HFSB) in September 2008. In 2007, Thomas joined the Hedge Fund Working Group to project manage the development of practice standards proposed by a group of 14 leading hedge fund managers that led to the establishment of the HFSB. Before joining the HFSB, Thomas was a senior manager at Oliver Wyman, the management consulting firm, where he extensively worked with major financial institutions in Europe in both asset management as well as corporate and investment banking. He joined Oliver Wyman in 2002 after working as an analyst in energy trading for a major commodities trading firm. Thomas is a regular speaker at hedge fund and regulatory conferences, and represents the SBAI at the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). He is a holder of a Master Degree in Industrial Engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany and an MSc from Purdue University, USA. Thomas Deinet is a CFA charterholder.

 

Nick Finegold: Founder & CEO, Curation Corp

Nick Finegold

Nick Finegold is CEO of Curation Corp, an emerging and peripheral risks monitoring service. Entering the financial services industry in 1987, Nick joined Deutsche Bank in 1995 to set up their Equity Division. In 2000 he left to set up Execution Limited, which was successfully sold in 2012. He then founded Curation Corp, a business that studies the world’s most disruptive trends, their velocity and the risks and opportunities they create.

 

 

 

 

Lucian Firth: Partner, Simmons & Simmons

Lucian Firth

Lucian Firth is a partner in the funds team at Simmons & Simmons, the international law firm. Lucian provides specialist advice to managers in relation to investment funds, including structuring hedge funds and managed accounts and related regulations. Lucian is also a leader on ESG (environmental, social and governance) issues for investment funds. His portfolio of clients includes many large established hedge fund managers, institutional asset managers as well as emerging and start-up hedge fund managers. Lucian is a member of the core team dedicated to start-up hedge fund work in London.

 

 

 

Hampus Hårdeman: Director, Brummer & Partners

Hampus Hardeman

Hampus Hårdeman is a Director in the Sustainability team at Brummer & Partners, which he joined in 2018. Brummer & Partners is a leading European hedge fund manager offering a well-diversified selection of actively managed funds by bringing together skilled managers with different investment strategies into a single corporate group. The Sustainability function is a group wide function supporting the individual hedge funds with their responsible investment activities such as strategy and policy development, ESG integration, education and training, reporting, communication. Hampus previously held leading roles within Institutional Shareholder Services (“ISS”) ESG division (Previously Ethix SRI Advisors), which he joined in 2010. He established the ESG division´s Clients Services & Operations team and, following the integration into ISS in 2015, he took on a fully commercial role managing all Nordic client relations. He had the opportunity to support and advise leading Nordic institutions on ESG integration in an equal mix of asset owners and asset managers. Hampus holds a Master of Science, Business Administration and Economics from the Stockholm University School of Business.

 

Robert Howie: Principal, Mercer

Robert Howie

Robert is a Principal in the Hedge Fund Boutique of Mercer's Wealth business. Located in London, he leads the manager research and generation of intellectual capital for alternative assets in Europe, focusing on hedge funds, insurance-linked securities, multi-asset and other liquid alternative strategies. Additionally, he advises institutional investors on the use of alternative assets, including manager selections and portfolio construction. Robert has nearly twenty years of experience within the financial services industry, and has been with Mercer for over fifteen years. Whilst at Mercer he been involved in both research and has consulted to clients across Europe and the Middle East, including pension plans, sovereign wealth funds and wealth managers. Prior to joining Mercer, he worked for Barclays in London and African Life (now part of Sanlam) in South Africa. Robert has a Master of Business Science from the University of Cape Town, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.

 

Nadia Humphreys: Senior Strategist for Sustainable Business and Finance, Bloomberg

Nadia Humphreys

Nadia Humphreys is a senior strategist for Sustainable Business and Finance at Bloomberg L.P, where she is passionate about new technologies and their impact on sustainable investment. Nadia supports the Secretariat for TCFD (Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure) and is a delegate on the European Commission’s Technical Expert Group for Sustainable Finance. Nadia was previously the Global Head of Entity Services, supporting regulatory product development for Bloomberg's Entity Exchange platform. She is a keen advocate for Women in FinTech and sits on Bloomberg’s EMEA Diversity Council. Nadia is also an ICMA mentor and coach under the 10,000 small businesses initiative. Prior to Bloomberg, Nadia worked in both JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, in a number of senior positions. At Goldman Sachs, Nadia managed Global Regulatory Quality Control across all jurisdictions and traded products. Nadia also worked for Goldman Sachs Asset Management, managing their EMEA Portfolio, Control & Accounting teams. Nadia supported the landmark merger of Rothesay Life and Paternoster, at the time representing a 40% market share in pensions’ reinsurance, and positioned Lloyd’s Arrow Syndicate for their merger with Global Atlantic Financial Group Limited. She holds a Bachelors degree, with honours, in Business from Bath University, a Licentiate in Homeopathy and is a Fellow of the Victoria College of Drama.

 

Adam Jacobs-Dean: Managing Director, Global Head of Markets, Governance and Innovation, AIMA

Adam Jacobs Dean

Adam Jacobs-Dean joined AIMA in February 2013 and is Managing Director, Global Head of Markets, Governance and Innovation. Prior to joining AIMA, he worked at the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA), where he focused on European regulatory initiatives dealing with OTC derivatives markets, notably the review of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID). Adam started his career at the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA), where he worked in both policy and supervisory roles. He also undertook a number of projects for the Committee of European Securities Regulators (CESR). In 2009 he was seconded from the FSA to the European Commission in Brussels, where he worked on Solvency II. Adam has an MA in German and French from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in European Policy and Management from Birkbeck.

 

Jennifer Lau: Senior Analyst, Alternative Investment Strategies, Aberdeen Standard Investments

Jennifer Lau

Jennifer Lau is a Senior Analyst on the Alternative Investment Strategies Team at Aberdeen Standard Investments, with a focus on alternative credit and leading ESG initiatives. The Alternative Investment Strategies Team manages $14 billion in AuM globally across a range of hedge fund strategies, through direct fund allocations, customised mandates and other investment solutions. Emerging opportunities in ESG are considered in the product development process. Jennifer graduated with an LLB in Law from Cambridge University and an MSc in Management from the Imperial College Business School.

 

 

 

Anthony Murphy: Managing Director, Prime Advocates

Anthony Murphy

Anthony Murphy is the founder and Managing Director of specialist impact advisory firm Prime Advocates. Anthony is an industry leading impact finance lawyer, impact strategist and social entrepreneur. He advises asset owners, hedge funds, corporates, foundations and financial organisations on social finance / financial innovation. Formerly, Anthony was the EMEA principal of Prime Services and Equity Finance legal for J.P. Morgan and Bear Stearns. Anthony has a wealth of experience in the alternatives and social finance space, having implemented responsible investment practices (legal, operational and commercial strategies) and impact structures for numerous asset owners, investors and credit institutions for over 18 years. He is also an expert in UK regulatory, hedge fund finance and impact commerce. Anthony is a practising UK solicitor having qualified at the global US law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges, specialising in Securitisation. He holds a higher LLB in Law from Bristol University. Anthony is a Co-Producer of Implementing ESG London 2019.

 

Sarah Olofsson: Responsible Investments Manager, Swedbank Robur

Sarah Olofsson

Sarah Olofsson is Responsible Investments Manager in the Sustainability team at Swedbank Robur, one of the largest asset managers in the Nordics, and a company with the vision to be a world leader in sustainable value creation. Within Swedbank Robur, sustainability is incorporated throughout all asset classes and is a fully integrated part of the Investment Management process. Having worked in the finance industry all of her career, with institutional sales, fixed income portfolio management and investment consulting, the transition into working chiefly with sustainability was a natural progression. “Rising demand of sustainable investments from end clients as well as new regulations will force all financial actors to move in this direction, it is only a matter of time. The transition to more sustainable investments is a journey I want to be part of and contribute to” says Sarah. Sarah studied at the Stockholm School of Economics, and first joined Swedbank Robur in 2008. After eight years she was recruited to BNP Paribas Asset Management and whilst there attained the first Nordic Eco-label certification for a Swedish investment fund, where after she briefly worked for the Nordic Eco-label to certify other funds, only to return to Swedbank Robur in 2018.

 

Paola Perotti: Managing Partner and CEO, GO Investment Partners

Paola Perotti

Ms Perotti is Managing Partner and CEO at GO Investment Partners (“GO”). GO’s flagship product is the TMAM - GO Japanese Engagement Fund (JEF), which is managed as a joint venture with Tokio Marine Asset Management. As at 31st August, 2019, JEF's strategy had AUM in excess of $650 million. GO further offers tailored engagement solutions for portfolio managers in Japan. Ms Perotti joined GO in early 2006. She was previously with Hermes European Focus Fund, where she had broad responsibilities for engaging with European public companies. Prior to joining Hermes, Ms Perotti spent 13 years in the investment banking division of Deutsche Bank in London, latterly as Managing Director. Her expertise was focused on cross-border transactions and equity offerings for public and private companies. Prior to 1989, Ms Perotti was with KPMG where she specialised in providing accounting support and services for M&A related work. Ms Perotti holds a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of London, England and she is a Chartered Accountant. She is fluent in Italian, English and Spanish. She has been studying Mandarin Chinese for 12 years now and sees this as a lifelong project.

 

Nicholas Rabener: Founder, FactorResearch

Nicholas Rabener

Nicolas Rabener is the founder of FactorResearch, which provides quantitative solutions for factor investing. Previously he created Jackdaw Capital, an award-winning quantitative investment manager. Before that Nicolas worked at GIC and Citigroup in London and New York. Nicolas holds an MSc from HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, is a CAIA charter holder, and enjoys endurance sports such as ultramarathons.
